Belmullet to receive €500,000 after being named an emerging destination town by Fáilte Ireland
Posted in Connect on December 9, 2019.
Mayo County Council welcomes today’s Fáilte Ireland announcement of a €500,000 grant for Belmullet as an emerging destination town. The funding, which is part of a €15.5m nationwide rollout under the State tourism body’s ‘Destination Towns’ initiative, will see the bulk of the monies being used to enhance the North Mayo town as a tourist destination.
The Wild Atlantic Way destination town of Belmullet was chosen by Mayo County Council and was successfully selected due to it’s capacity and appeal in attracting international visitors for overnight stays, a range of food offerings to meet visitor needs and a variety of tourist attractions.
Mayo County Council Chief Executive, Peter Hynes, welcomed today’s announcement; “The importance of tourism as an economic driver and source of employment cannot be overstated. It is a unique industry in terms of its ability to spur local job creation and sustain rural communities.
Belmullet’s strategic location on the Wild Atlantic Way provides it with a unique appeal for tourists who wish to visit the area. The scheme will provide funding for Mayo County Council to enhance Belmullet’s public spaces in a way that will engage tourists and enhance their experience in the town.”
Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Brendan Mulroy said; “I am delighted that Belmullet and Mayo are to benefit from this new initiative. This funding will allow greater engagement with tourists and enhance their experience while visiting North Mayo.
Congratulations must go to those who have worked hard in getting this project over the line both in Mayo County Council’s Tourism Department and those in the local community who make Belmullet what it is.”
Padraig Philbin, Head of Tourism with Mayo County Council, believes there is untapped potential in the North Mayo town; “Belmullet is a town with much untapped potential and Mayo County Council aims to make it a destination where tourists will want to stay longer and experience the unique local culture. The funding provided by Fáilte Ireland will give Belmullet a major boost in becoming one of the best places to visit in Mayo.”

Tidy Towns Pollinator Award 2019 for Belmullet
The winners of the 2019 Tidy Towns Awards were announced in Dublin Monday, September 30th where Belmullet was declared the winner of the regional Pollinator Award.
The Tidy Towns committee in Belmullet have made a determined long-term commitment to help pollinators by managing their public spaces in a pollinator-friendly way.
This includes protecting and planting native hedgerows and pollinator-friendly orchards; reducing mowing to allow wildflowers to grow and planting pollen-rich flowers.
The committee’s endeavours have also involved raising public awareness of the town’s biodiversity and of the importance of pollinators by working with local schools and groups like the Beavers, Scouts and ICA as well as local businesses and by coordinating competitions.
Ireland has 99 species of bees and one third of them are currently threatened with extinction due to a reduction in food sources (wildflowers) and safe nesting sites.
The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan was launched in 2015 to work with communities, businesses, parks, schools and farms to make an Ireland where pollinators can survive and thrive.
Cllr Brendan Mulroy, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, remarked of Belmullet’s win: “Tidy Towns groups are the unsung heroes of the country. As a local authority, we recognise this. We also recognise that the Tidy Towns competition has wholeheartedly embraced work to support pollinators, including the special Local Authority Pollinator Award.”

Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead (Belmullet Tidy Towns ) was awarded first place in the Together for Biodiversity Awards – for their project ‘It’s All About the Bees and the Seas’, at the National Biodiversity Conference, held in Dublin Castle on Wednesday.
The National Biodiversity Conference was organised by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS ) and the Irish Forum on Natural Capital, sponsored by Dublin Port Company. The Belmullet voluntary group won Category A – criteria: a small community group project, run on less than €3,000 budget.
Their project - ‘It’s All About the Bees and the Seas' – seeks to create awareness of the wealth of bird life and marine life that is to be found in the area of Béal an Mhuirthead – the main town in the barony of Erris. The group has created storyboards along a walkway by Blacksod Bay (SPA ), giving information about some of the interesting birds and the marine life that inhabit or visit this very special place.
The Mullet Peninsula is home to Ireland’s rarest bee and in efforts to avoid the extinction of the Great Yellow Bumblebee and the Belted Beauty Moth, the Tidy Towns group is taking some specific measures to create awareness among the wider community and to help preserve and improve the amazing habitats which sustain these important species.
Some other activities undertaken by the group include: guided walks with Birdwatch Ireland; hosting a Leave No Trace course; leaving grass swards uncut at various locations (to allow wildflowers to grow ); planting a Willow Tunnel; creating a herb garden; planting native hedgerows; collaborating with the Erris Beekeepers Association; participating in regular Clean Coasts events; working with local schools; cutting down on the use of chemical weed killers; hosting Heritage and Nature trail events; and organising an annual Midnight Corncrake Tour on the Mullet Peninsula in conjunction with Ballycroy National Park.
The overall aim of this unique project is to create more awareness of the wealth of biodiversity in the area, to make people aware of the threats to biodiversity and how to reduce these threats and to guide farmers, gardeners, accommodation providers and tourism product providers in the direction of best practice and eco-tourism and so create a more sustainable future for both residents and wildlife in Belmullet and on the Mullet Peninsula.
Members of Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead were thrilled with the news of the win and extended thanks to all those who helped to achieve this national award. Accepting the award in Dublin Castle on behalf of the committee, Margaret Tallott said: "We are so happy that all of our hard work has been recognised on a national platform and we are confident that this award will help our community to progress even further in terms of being biodiversity champions. We would like to say míle buíochas to all those who have helped us and worked with us on our many projects over the years and we are optimistic that beautiful Belmullet will achieve even more success in the future."
